306 by Elliot London

Filmed in Chicago in 2009, the short film306 depicts a day in the life of a young man named Eric. Without a word of dialogue, but with an effective and beautiful score, director and writer Elliot London and writer Greg Phelan take their lead through a wide series of emotions. From his first waking moment in the safety of his bed, until his return to it, at the end of his day.



I really loved London`s film, firstly due to how visually beautiful it was shot. I As Eric, actor Brian Estel is an appealing and compelling actor who within the films relatively short 10 minutes grabs you tightly and takes you with him through his day.



My only issue with 306 was the ending. The ending was not so much a disappointment (although it may have been...), it was just that everything I read about the film (and sorry I am doing it here as well) pushed a twist ending. Even when I clicked on the Vimeo link I could not help but see the first comment mentioning the twist. The fact is, I did not really think it was much of a twist, it was sort of quiet and blended in quite nicely with the rest of the film. Pointing out a twist however only set up the ending to be a bit of a disappointment. Just enjoy 306 for what it is, a beautifully filmed 10 plus minutes of moments of Eric`s day.

Kudos to Dominic Cooper in The Devil's Double

I am not sure why but until The Devil's Double actor Dominic Cooper was not even remotely on my radar. I am not sure I really saw him in too much actually. I think I knew him most from him being in Mamma Mia and I only got about 10 minutes into that movie before turning it off.



Checking IMDB I of course saw many of Cooper in many of his earlier roles but again he never jumped off the screen the way he did in The Devil's Double. His dual performance was flawless from beginning to end and I hope he is remembered as we enter the award season. The film is incredible, hard to watch at times due to violence and the immense level of cruelty but it never let go of me until the credits began to role.

Hawaiian Heat: Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa has to be one of the hottest Hawaiian actors to make a splash the last year or two. Born in Honolulu, Momoa moved to Norwalk, Iowa but as he got older the Islands called him home where he returned to attend college.



In the late 90's, Momoa was discovered by designer Takeo who helped launch his modeling career. Soon after in 1999, Jason won 'Hawaii's Model of the Year.' Jason has a passion for travel, exploring and adventure. Ice climbing, snowboarding, mountain biking, long board skateboarding and roller hockey are all activities he has loved over the years.



Jason joined the cast of Baywatch Hawaii in 1999 and remained with the show for the next two years. Appearance on North Shore, The Game and Stargate: Atlantis followed. 2011 saw Jason move from supporting to lead roles with memorable turns on HBO's Game Of Thrones and the lead in the remake of Conan the Barbarian. Jason will be seen next in Bullet To The Head with Christian Slater and Sylvester Stallone.

Kudos to Jessica Lange in American Horror Story

In my last year in University I took this incredible course called 'The History of Mental Disorders'. The course was incredible as the professor didn't really teach much he just pressed play each week on VCR. Each week he played one movie after another about the history of every kind of mental disorder depicted in the movies. One of these movies was Jessica Lange's turn as Francis Farmer in Francis from 1982. Up until the point I had only seen Lange on television in King Kong and thought of her more as a sex symbol more than an actress. I of course was wrong. Lange has become a favorite of mine. I cannot believe I waited until just a few years ago to first watch Tootsie, but I have watched it twice since.



Lange is absolutely brilliant as Constance in American History Story and although I love entire show, Lange's scenes, and quotes are my favorite part of the 44 minutes. Lange's line delivery is incredible and she plays off each of the cast members equally well. I am going to miss her relationship with Ade, but given the dead seem never to actually die on this show hopefully there will be more.

I have not really loved the trajectory of Chris O'Donnell's career but...as a teenager I loved Chris in his early films. I haven't seen Men Don't Leave in awhile and will have to track it down on Amazon to watch again.

Jeff Bridges in
King Kong


I was just a kid when I saw the 76 version of King Kong on television during a Saturday afternoon matinee. From there I tried to watch it every time it came on tv until I finally managed to tape it on my VHS machine. The film is flawed but to me is so much more enjoyable than the recent Peter Jackson version. This King Kong has Jeff Bridges (with his long hair), Jessica, and an Ape whose emotions are far more real, even in an Ape Suit, than Jackson could digitally portray.




Jack Nicholson in
The Postman Always Rings Twice


I think the first time I saw Jack Nicholson on screen when I was about 10 or 11. I went with a friend and his family to see 'The Witches Of Eastwick'. I fell in love with two things during that movie, Michelle Pfieffer and Jack's acting. Jack's devil was brilliantly over the top and I have sought out most of Jack's work since.

A Pattinson Pass

Like many, I crushed over actor Robert Pattinson when I first saw him as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire. But...for some reason I cannot stand anything Twilight related. I usually love anything Vampire connected but I cannot get through an Twilight film. Some of today's hottest actors make up the cast but the pacing seems in slow motion to me. Kristian Stewart grates on my last nerve and except for his abs, Taylor Lautner, and his lack of acting skill, hold no appeal to me. (sorry!). Pattinson also has a bit of that dear in the headlight look when promoting the film, something I am sure is connected to sudden fame and constant work.



It was nice this past weekend to fall back in love with Patinson in Water For Elephants. I loved every minute of this film from the beginning with Hal Holbrook through the incredible performance by Christoph Waltz and the climatic finale. I love elephants and as kid always dreamed of joining the circus. When I was university I protested local circus's coming to town due to their use of animals, but as a kid the circus held a huge amount of magic for me, all brought back while enjoying this film.
